Submission Tip: Eliminate PHP Errors (TF)

Howdy talented authors! In this ongoing quest for more transparency, here I am, again, with more juicy tidbits about the reviewing process. More specifically, I’d like to address some issues that seem to be tripping up a lot of authors. In the interest of brevity, I won’t go too much into the issues themselves since they’re a single search away.
This time we look at PHP errors.
A template’s PHP code shouldn’t raise any errors, warnings or notices. Most developers just deal with errors, since they’re showstopping, and call it a day. We’ll need you to go the extra mile and squash all notices and warning since notices can cause performance issues and it’s just not cool!
Chime in at the comments if you have any questions and thanks for reading!

For those of you in the know, you’ve probably noticed that Amanda Hackwith has moved to the Rockable Press side of our business following the release of her successful book Freelance Confidential: The Whole Truth on Freelancing. She’s still a full-time Editor at Envato, but is now putting her skills to use creating books and other Premium educational content.
I’ve taken over Editing FreelanceSwitch, which is really exciting. I’ve been in the drivers seat for a couple months now, so things are running smoothly. No big speed bumps in the transition. I’d love to hear any suggestion you all have, and I’ll drop some information about myself here so you can get to know me.
Big FreelanceSwitch Fan
Yah, I’ve been a fan of FreelanceSwitch since the beginning, back when Collis, Leo, and Skellie were posting regularly on the site – and well before I came to work for Envato. I’m still in awe of N.C. Winters amazing Freelance Freedom comics, am super excited to work with our regular writers, and have been hard at work bringing in new voices to post on the site. I look forward to adding more material and have some new ideas that you’ll see added to the site slowly.
Freelancing Experience
My background is in graphic design and web design. I did some Drupal theming, logo design, blog writing, and various graphic work back in 2007, and earlier before coming to work for Envato. I don’t do much freelancing now, but in the past I’ve gone through the trenches of building a client base, learning to balance finances, and build a reputation, all while working from oversees. So I’ve walked in freelancer’s shoes.
Blog Editing Experience
I’ve been editing blogs for Envato since early 2008 when I took over Editing Psdtuts+, which I managed to help grow into a powerful force in the design community. I also launched Vectortuts+ with Envato and am still the Editor there, along with my new role here as Editor of FreelanceSwitch. This splits my full-time workweek with Envato in half fairly evenly. So I’m a full-time permalancer and very happy in this role. Envato is a special company, which cares about it’s employes, and works to empower it’s users to reach their goals. I feel fortunate to be a part of this team.
I’ve worked on other exciting projects at Envato, such as the short lived Creative Sessions, which we rolled into the functionality of our Tuts+ blogs. That was a very cool project, much like running an online magazine – commissioning a cover each month was very exciting. I also managed the launch of the Tuts+ Marketplace, assisting Skellie with getting that off the ground. It’s a project that didn’t take off like a rocket, but is still growing steadily in the hands of Jeffrey Way and other marketplace managers.
Aside from editing various blogs and sites for Envato, I’ve also written quite a bit for various design blogs on the web, and have a passion for teaching through this medium.
My Office and Interests
I’m big into reading blogs on writing, design, illustration, and online business – books as well on my iPad. I try to draw as much as possible, more of a hobby now than a career focus. I just want to keep active with it for now.
I live in Mount Dora, Florida. We recently bought a house here. I’ve been married for ten years, have two young children, the youngest is only a few months old. I recently rented a small office space in the downtown area of the city I live in. Our home was just getting too crazy to work from, so now I have a quiet place to get things done in, with a short commute (only about a 10 minute drive). I love my man-cave of an office.
In the great coffee debate, I usually prefer less work, rather than a perfect cup. At my office I use a Keurig. There is no stove there so it’s perfect for that space. I do appreciate a good cup of Joe though and at home use a Stovetop Espresso Maker.
In the geeked-out Mac vs. PC debate, I’m Mac all the way. I’ve been using Mac’s since the iMac looked like a huge colorful brain (back then mine was snow white actually). I now use a 17″ MacBook Pro with an external monitor.
Interviews
Here are some interviews I’ve done.
Twitter
Here are the Twitter feeds I manage, my personal one, as well as the FreelanceSwitch and Envato Vectors accounts.
Over to You
I’d love to hear any suggestions you all have. Is there anything you would love to see implemented on FreelanceSwtich? Feel free to drop any questions you have about me or the site below.

I have a confession to make. I’m addicted to caffeine. For breakfast I either have a can of Diet Coke or a small iced mocha with skim milk from Dunkin Donuts, which happens to be a 5 minute walk from my house or a quick drive on my way to the office.
I am well aware that having a can of Diet Coke for breakfast is not healthy. I should be eating poached eggs, whole grain toast, a banana, and a glass of pomegranate juice. Here’s the thing—I can’t eat first thing in the morning or I feel sick. Here’s the other thing—I don’t have time.
I suspect that many of you that work in the fast paced media world might also have a caffeine addiction and also don’t have the luxury of a breakfast that includes all of the food pyramid. Am I right? So coffee (or Diet Coke) it is.
I’ve created a list of some of the top coffee makers that should perk up any freelancers day. And, depending on your lifestyle and taste, there is a coffee maker for you on the market; I guarantee it!
I don’t own a coffee maker. But if I did, it would be this one. I don’t drink enough coffee to warrant needing to brew a whole pot, and with the Keurig, you brew one cup at a time. It’s a great coffee maker for the office as people can brew their favorite flavor of coffee, cider, or tea one by one and it’s always fresh. No more wasting hours-old coffee. You also don’t have to keep the coffee burner on all day, cutting down on electricity and the hazard.
The biggest complaint I have heard about this machine is the waste it produces. But they good people at Keurig came up with a solution. They have created a K-Cup strainer so you can spoon your favorite ground beans into it and it brews it for you. Your best bet is the Keurig Elite Brewing System. The next model up is the Special Edition, and the only differences between the two is that the Special Edition has chrome in its design and a choice of three cup sizes to the regular system’s two. Save yourself the $30.
Real coffee connoisseurs will tell you the French Press is the way to go. It’s definitely the best looking coffee maker of the bunch and doesn’t take up counter space, which is always a good thing. It was first used in France in the late 19th century and has evolved over time. The presses of today have a cylinder, usually made of glass or plastic, with a lid and a plunger that has a fine circular mesh filter made out of wire or nylon. You scoop your coffee grounds into the bottom of the press and pour boiling water over it and give it time to brew. To filter, you press the plunger which pushes the filter to the bottom of the press, trapping the grounds under it.
The coffee grounds remain in direct contact to the hot water during brewing, giving a richer flavor than coffee brewed with a paper filter. Unless bitter coffee is your thing, you want to drink your French Press coffee right away. The longer you let it stand the more bitter it gets.
This is active coffee. You can’t just flip a switch and walk away. It’s also not good if you like to have more than one cup of coffee over an hour-long period of time, since it doesn’t keep well and loses heat. The Bodum Chambord Double Wall Thermal Coffee Press impresses me because of it’s design—not only does it have cool handles, the glass cylinder is encased in a stainless steel frame making it spill-proof in case someone knocks it over. With a French Press, you get what you pay for so buy wisely.
My pick for a basic coffee maker would be the Mr. Coffee SKX23. It’s the first coffee maker I ever had. My parents were sick of coming to visit me and not being able to have a cup of coffee, so they bought this sweet little coffee maker to keep at my place and it’s still going strong…when they come over that is.
It’s easy to use and perfect for the non-coffee connoisseur, and it even has an automatic shut-off after two hours so you don’t burn your place down. It also has a cord storage feature to help keep your countertop clear. Sure, it’s not the sleekest, coolest model—but I’m sure if you’re more Folgers than Kopi Luwak, you’re not too worried about the coolness factor of this particular kitchen gadget.
Say you want a better coffee maker than your basic model. Something with sleek lines that is programmable. Something that makes your coffee taste a little better, but isn’t as time consuming as the French Press. Something that brews a lot of coffee because you need a lot of coffee. We have just the thing for you: the DeLonghi Exclusivo. Sounds impressive huh?
This coffee maker brews up to 14 cups and keeps it hot for two hours before it automatically shuts off. And you can program it to start brewing at the same time each morning so it’s literally ready and waiting for you. And there’s no need for those annoying paper filters, this baby’s got a permanent coffee filter! It also filters your water and tells you how long your coffee has been sitting around, waiting for you to drink it. It also lets you know when it’s time to decalcify the unit. It doesn’t get much smarter than this.
What coffee maker do you use, or is there one on the market you’ve got your eye on to purchase?
Submission Tip: Understand the ThemeForest Reviewing Process

There seems to be a little confusion about how we review themes over at ThemeForest, our premium marketplace for everything from WordPress themes to email templates. In the interest of transparency and, hopefully, increased awareness among authors, here is a quick little tidbit explaining our typical workflow when reviewing a template.
The graphic describes the process for a WordPress template but it’s essentially applicable for each and every submission. Pay attention to the little notes on the side since they contain additional details about each section.
Hopefully this helps clarify things a bit. Let me know if you have any questions in the comments!
